Software migrations and setup

Since I posted an update on what I use, I thought it would be good to dump my current thoughts on some of the tools here.

Around a year and a half I finally decided to buy a domain and slowly de-google my digital life. This is when I got zurdala.es. The thing is that I am not fully satisfied with it; I do not feel fully represented or happy with it. I should stick to it, but where is the fun in that?

Migrating to an email (or multiple) under that domain was a slow thing to do due to the laaaaarge amount of accounts I have, that thankfully I keep track of in my password manager. Receiving emails from online accounts where I had to change the email was fine since Fastmail can act as client for those accounts, so it was very transparent to stop relying on Gmail and Outlook.

Now, I am also considering changing email provider from Fastmail to Infomaniak. Why??

Well, it is cheaper (60€/year vs 20€/y), runs in European soil and includes 1 TB of storage space, which is very convenient for phone backups and storing some important files that I want to have access to from the phone. And that is all for 1/3 of the price. On top of that, it runs on green energy (whatever that means) and it is owned by a foundation. On the other hand, some goo things of Fastmail: simply a very round product, the UI is great, it was flawless all this time, it is a no-bullshit approach.

Let’s see if I do it in the end.

Another thing I want to reevaluate is Miniflux: I love it, but it is 15€/y and I think I can find cheaper or free open source alternatives. There are online communities that self-host an RSS service and I could join, donate there and, also, get access to a Git forge (perfect to avoid GitHub and GitLab) or bookmarking services (like Linkding).

The email and the domain are the biggest things, mainly because I would like to choose a domain that makes sense, I can use for a long long time and that I do not “cringe” about often. Should be good for professional use as well, as it is the one recruiters will see in the CV.

If we go to the operating system, I had Fedora for a while. The thing is that I had the strangest error, several times: if the laptop was sleeping and the battery got drained, the filesystem would get corrupted and bye bye having a workable laptop. It was happening often and every time, since I was not managing to fix it, I had to reinstall.

Naturally, I got tired of that quickly. I had a quick session of distrohopping and landed back on Kubuntu, which always has played nice in my experience and continues to do. Also, it works well with dual boot with Windows 11. Sidenote: I dream with a job where I do not touch Windows and the Office 365 suite (Teams and Outlook especially).

My idea would be to drop Kubuntu again and find something that I can update more quickly (I can’t wait for Plasma 6.7 and the rebirthed Oxygen theme), somewhat stable and user friendly (I don’t want to be fixing things all the time, I haven’t got the time), good in a dual boot, and hopefully not draining the battery (Fedora was not going to sleep) and destroying the filesystem. Is it so hard to find something like this that is not Canonical?
